Shanti Inmate Support Project

Shanti Volunteers Serve Inmates at Prisons around Western Washington

In keeping with its commitment to increase accessibility to emotional support, Shanti has a project providing support to inmates in the King County Correctional Facility (KCCF) and also to those at the Women's Correctional Center at Purdy, McNeil Island Penitentiary, and the four facilities at Monroe State Penitentiary. The program ensures that inmates who are living with HIV/AIDS or other life-threatening illnesses will have an opportunity to receive one-to-one emotional support from one of our specially-trained volunteers at the jails.

The need for emotional support in prison is substantial, since the incidence of HIV/AIDS among inmates is high. Most come from segments of society that are already marginalized. Few inmates have the opportunity to talk about their feelings.

Since its inception in 1999, the project has helped Shanti in its attempt to make services available to as wide and diverse a population as possible. Without Shanti's presence at the jails, many inmates would have no one in whom to confide their feelings of fear, grief, and loneliness. Reports from jail personnel, inmates, and volunteers are positive.
