From a Shanti Client

"I felt safe and I learned that I can share and trust others. You may not know this, but you really had a big influence on me. You helped me open some doors and thoughts that I pushed down so far that I didn't know they were even there. Today I am attempting to work with those."

Shanti Volunteers Serve Inmates at the King County Jail

In keeping with its commitment to increase accessibility to emotional support, Shanti has initiated a program providing support to inmates in the King County Correctional Facility (KCCF). The program ensures that inmates who are living with HIV/AIDS or other life-threatening illnesses will have an opportunity to receive one-to-one emotional support from one of our specially-trained volunteers at the jail.

The need for emotional support at the jail is substantial, since the incidence of HIV/AIDS among inmates is high. Most come from segments of society that are already marginalized. Few have many - if any - opportunities to talk about their feelings.

Since its inception in 1999, the program at the KCCF has helped Shanti in its attempt to make services available to as wide and diverse a population as possible. Without Shanti's presence at the jail, many inmates would have no one in whom to confide their feelings of fear, grief, and loneliness. Reports from jail personnel, inmates, and volunteers are positive.
