In 1999, I made my way across the country on a Greyhound
bus to Seattle and landed my dream job with Multifaith Works. I'm not religious
and most days I wouldn't even claim to be spiritual, so let's just say I got
lucky - really, really lucky. After working as a House Manager for a bit, I
stepped into the role of Shanti Program Coordinator. I remember my first taste
of the Shanti community – the participants and leaders of that volunteer
training wowed me with their level of honesty and kindness. As I reflect on my
8 years with this organization, I think about my teapot collection – gifted to
me by a housing resident over many birthdays and holidays because he decided I
needed something to collect! He died in 2002, but those teapots remind me of
that same generous spirit I’ve seen embodied in so many volunteers, co-workers,
and clients.
At the end of July I'll be saying goodbye and moving to
Northeastern Wisconsin with my partner, Amy. My work with Shanti has prepared
me for transitions - I know I will grieve pieces of this change and find joy in
others. I have been changed by this work and this beautiful community, and I
wish the same for you.
